How to Block WiFi Router Radiation (and Phone & Laptop EMF)

Start with the four free changes

A Wi-Fi router is a low-power transmitter that runs continuously, and RF falls off steeply with distance. That makes placement and scheduling more effective than any product you can buy:

  1. Distance. Doubling your distance from the router cuts the power density to roughly a quarter. Getting the router out of bedrooms, out from under desks and off the headboard wall is the single biggest reduction available.
  2. Turn it off overnight. A mains timer or the router's own Wi-Fi schedule removes eight hours of exposure where you are most sensitive to it, at zero cost.
  3. Turn down the transmit power. Many routers expose a transmit-power setting (often 100/50/25%). Most homes have far more signal than they need.
  4. Use Ethernet where the device does not move. A wired desktop, TV or console lets you disable Wi-Fi on both ends. This is the only approach that removes the field rather than reducing it.

Then measure, so you know what you changed

Wi-Fi is bursty, so use a meter with peak hold and read in µW/m². Take a baseline at the bed, the desk and the sofa; make one change at a time and re-measure the same spots. An RF meter or a three-field meter such as the TriField TF2 is enough; if you also want to know which band and which device, use a spectrum analyser. See the EMF meter buying guide if you have not bought one yet.

Shielding a router, a wall or a room

  • Router shielding covers and cages. A conductive cover reduces the field in the directions it covers; expect reduced Wi-Fi range too. Physically better than nothing but inferior to relocating the router.
  • A shielded wall or ceiling. Where the router (or the neighbour's) is on the other side of a wall, EMF shielding paint on that surface, properly grounded, gives a large, permanent reduction across the whole room.
  • Curtains and canopies. Shielding fabric made up as curtains or a bed canopy is the standard answer for a bedroom where the source cannot be moved or switched off.
  • Windows. If the strongest readings are at a window, shielding window film addresses the path the RF is actually taking.

One rule: never enclose your own router without expecting worse performance — the device compensates for a weak link by transmitting more, and phones inside a weakly shielded room raise their own output too. Shield the person or the room, not the client device's ability to reach the base station.

Laptops, phones and tablets

  • A laptop radiation shield pad sits between the machine and your body and addresses the field you get from close contact — the exposure that distance rules cannot help with, because the device is on you.
  • Wire the laptop (Ethernet adapter) and turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for long working sessions.
  • An EMF blocking phone case only shields the side it covers; a case that wrapped the antenna entirely would drive the phone to full transmit power. Use it with speakerphone or wired headphones, and keep the phone off your body when idle.
  • Airplane mode when the device is not in use is the most effective single setting on any phone or tablet.

What to expect

Realistically, placement plus scheduling plus Ethernet can take a bedroom from readings that dominate the room to background levels, with no shielding purchase at all. Shielding earns its place when the source is outside your control — a neighbour's router, a cell site, a smart meter. In that order, the money goes where it does the most good.
