Electromagnetic radiation is invisible—it has no smell, no taste, and no colour. Yet prolonged exposure can pose serious health risks. That’s why measuring EMF levels is essential. Whether at home, at work, or in other environments, reliable detection is the first step in addressing and mitigating long-term exposure.
These instruments are especially critical for businesses operating in electronics-heavy environments. Elevated EMF levels can cause disruptive interference with equipment such as radios, computers, cell phones, and televisions—impacting performance, reliability, and in some cases, leading to permanent damage. Accurate measurement helps maintain operational integrity and prevent costly downtime.
There are three primary categories of electromagnetic fields (EMFs):
Low-Frequency (LF) EMF – Typically emitted by power lines, power transformers, household wiring, high voltage cables, and common appliances. These fields are associated with the 50–60 Hz power grid.
High-Frequency (HF) EMF – Generated by wireless communication devices such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, laptops, smart meters, and microwave transmitters. These operate in the radiofrequency and microwave spectrum.
Natural EMF – These occur naturally in the environment, such as the Earth’s geomagnetic field or atmospheric electricity from thunderstorms.
Different forms of EMF operate across distinct frequency ranges, which means specialized instruments are required to measure them accurately.
For example, low-frequency magnetic fields—such as those from power lines or household wiring—are best measured with a gaussmeter like the MG-300. In contrast, high-frequency EMFs from sources like Wi-Fi, mobile phones, or radar are more effectively detected using a radiofrequency analyser such as the HF-B3G.
